The Project Engineer (Asset Protection) is accountable for the management of the Porterbrook assets whilst they are on lease to the Train Operating Companies (TOC’s). Through liaison with the engineering functions of our customers the role will monitor asset condition, management of spares, management of enhancement projects being carried out by external suppliers ensuring that they are delivered on time, to budget and with a quality outcome.  This will require the management of suppliers, the costing of projects, and the end to end oversight management of the project.  The role also manages vehicle redelivery and oversight of the off-lease assets. 


This role combines a background in the management of assets, delivery of projects and commercial skills.  Ideal candidates will have a detailed knowledge of the rail industry and have a track record in managing enhancement and modification projects. The ability to balance the safety and the protection of the assets with the commercial aspects of fleet leasing will also be critical.  Candidates should come with an engineering qualification and ideally will be a Chartered Engineering (or working towards this), although that is not critical.  A project management qualification would also be helpful.

Engineering Project Manager, Derby, competitive salary and benefits

Porterbrook Leasing Company specialises in the leasing of all types of railway rolling stock and associated equipment.  Based in Derby with a corporate Head Office in London, the organisation is undertaking a period of transformational change as it responds to the changing landscape in rail.  The engineering function is seeking the most talented engineering resources in the industry to join its team, to enable the business to be fit for the future.
The role of the Engineering Project Manager will be to lead across a range of specialist engineering projects, including fleet enhancements, heavy maintenance overhauls and implementing innovative solutions to improve the performance of the fleet and end user customer experience.  Key elements will include taking the project from concept through to delivery, management of project budgets, managing the project plans and effective management of any risks.   The role will involve working in close collaboration with suppliers, train operators and the internal fleet engineering team. The role will also involve ensuring that the projects are delivered safely and that the benefits expected are delivered.  
Candidates for this role will have 5 to 10 years rolling stock engineering experience and be either a Chartered Engineer or working towards this.  Ideal candidates will have specific experience of working with in project management of large-scale engineering improvement projects.  They will also have a strong track record of managing supplier relationships with either manufacturers or maintainers. Organisational capability and planning skills are key to the success of this role, along with the ability to identify issues before they emerge and take appropriate remedial action.
