Head of Fleet Services, Derby, competative package

Porterbrook Leasing Company specialises in the leasing of all types of railway rolling stock and associated equipment.  Based in Derby with a corporate Head Office in London, the organisation is undertaking a period of transformational change as it responds to the changing landscape in rail.  The engineering function is seeking the most talented commercial and technical resources in the industry to join its team, to enable the business to be fit for the future.

The Head of Fleet Services role opportunity is one of three similar roles which collectively manage the Porterbrook fleet portfolio leased to the Train Operating Companies (TOCs).  This role has responsibility for fleets leased to Northern Rail, ScotRail, Cross Country Trains, TransPenninie Express and Caledonian Sleeper.  The fleet mix will change over time in accordance with lease periods. 

The role is accountable for coordinating engineering and asset management activities to ensure the safe, reliable and cost-effective operation of all fleets throughout their full asset lifecycle in accordance with the required specifications.  A key aspect of the role is also to proactively support customers in their operation of Porterbrook fleets.
Providing exceptional leadership to the team of Fleet Asset Managers, Fleet Support Engineers and also Technical Support Engineers who are remotely located at customers depots.  The role will also interface with the Commercial Manager with the same portfolio of TOCs who manages the customer relationship from a commercial perspective.  Key to the role is ensuring that customers have a single point of contact for all aspects of the fleet management, including fleet overhauls.  Porterbrook’s ethos is to work in close collaboration with customers.

The ideal candidate will be a chartered engineer with around 8 years plus fleet support experience within a rail environment.  They will have excellent leadership capability and have experience of managing remote based teams effectively.  The ability to plan and organise is critical, along with excellent stakeholder management capability.  They will be highly regarded within the rail industry and have a keen interest in innovation within the rail industry.

Head of Safety and Operations, Derby, up to £90k

Porterbrook Leasing Company specialises in the leasing and asset management of passenger and freight railway rolling stock and associated equipment.  Based in Derby with a corporate Head Office in London, the organisation is undertaking a period of transformational change as it responds to the changing landscape in rail.  The engineering function is seeking the most talented commercial and technical resources in the industry to join its team, to enable the business to be fit for the future.


The Head of Safety and Operations is a new role which will lead on safety across the whole business as well as managing the safety and compliance aspects of the Engineering Services function including engineering standards, document management and engineering change.   In addition, the role has a strong focus on facilitating external accreditations and on driving improved sustainability.    This is a high-profile role and will play an active role in continuing the implementation of a safety culture across the business, ensuring safety is a priority and a function which drives continuous improvement through the safety management systems. 


The ideal candidate will come from an engineering safety background in a rail environment and be experienced in the implementation and development of safety management systems. The ideal candidate will have good experience of managing engineering safety activities and associated processes including standards, compliance, engineering risk management, technical documentation and engineering change.  Experience of wider railway operations and safety beyond rolling stock is desirable. A track record of developing innovative solutions to drive a deep safety culture would also be welcome along with a strong understanding of how technology can enable business effectiveness and efficiency.  This role will appeal to someone who is ambitious, with exceptional leadership skills.  Relevant safety qualifications are highly desirable and an engineering qualification would be a distinct advantage.
